Champion of Champions report- Triples

On a beautiful autumn day at Buckland Bowling Club eleven men’s and eight women’s teams contested the Centre champion of champion triples.

In the Men’s five teams had byes first round leaving Papakura v Waiuku, Clark’s Beach v Buckland and Homai v Pukekohe to play the first round. Papakura defeated Waiuku 18-12, Clark’s Beach beat Buckland 19-15 and Pukekohe defeated Homai 21-12.

The Women’s first round saw Papakura beat Hunua 16-12, Buckland beat Manurewa 20-19, Waiuku defeated Homai 18-16, and Pukekohe defeated Clark’s Beach 23-7. This set up two very good semifinals with Papakura v Buckland and Waiuku v Pukekohe.

These semifinals again produced two great games Buckland’s Diane Main side defeated Angela Temple’s Papakura with a two on the last end to win 14-13 and book a place in the final. In the other semi Waiuku’s Marama Onehi beat Adrienne Tilyard 21-17 with the Waiuku women scoring all seven points from the last 5 ends.

In Men’s second round Manurewa beat Hunua 21-10, Te Kauwhata beat Patumahoe 18-11, Papakura East End defeated Papakura 15-13 and Clark’s Beach over-came Pukekohe in a very tight game to win 21-20.

In the first Men’s semi Manurewa skipped by Dave Clark hit their straps early and went on to defeat Te Kauwhata comfortably (21-4). In the other semi it was a much closer affair between Clarks Beach and Papakura East End. After 18 ends the game was tied 12-12 needing an extra end to decide the game. Clark’s Beach picked up two shots from the extra end to go on and meet Manurewa in the final.

The Women’s final played between Waiuku - Marama Onehi (s), Andrea Williams & Bette Holmes and tournament hosts Buckland - Diane Main (s), Bernice Maloney & Liz Prattley produced another quality final with the teams tied after eleven ends, unfortunately for Waiuku they only scored one more point in the game while Buckland picked up two threes and a five to clear away and finally win 20-9.

The men’s final between Manurewa’s Dave Clark (s), Roger Andrew and Gary Coppins against Clarks Beach - Steve Maher (s), Dave Culbert & Neville McSweeney, saw a very quick start from Manurewa who led 12-1 after 6 ends and continuing to apply the pressure with lead Gary Coppins and two Roger Andrew never far from the jack which allowed Dave Clark to keep the pressure on his opposition skip. Clarks Beach tried to rally in the second half of the game and pushed back to 15-8, but the Manurewa team kicked on to take the game and the men’s triples title 20-12.

Congratulations to both Manurewa men and Buckland ladies.
