Champion of Champions Fours Report

BCM Champ of Champ Fours Sunday 2nd May 2021.

With the sun going down and the light disappearing from the green the men’s champ of champ final between Manurewa and Homai was getting interesting. Manurewa had started well and looked like taking out the tournament at a canter but as darkness fell Homai under Vince Hape had other ideas and started to claw back points.

Earlier in the day eleven Men’s teams and eight women’s teams had started the event again in beautiful sunshine at Buckland Bowling Club. In the men’s first round Te Kauwhata played Buckland, Manurewa played Hunua and Patumahoe, verse Waiuku with Te Kauwhata, Manurewa and Waiuku progressing to the next round to join Homai, Papakura, Pukekohe, Papakura East End and Clark’s Beach who all had the bye first round.

In the Women’s first round Manurewa defeated Buckland 18-9, Hunua beat Papakura 11-8 and Pukekohe overcame Homai 22-6, with Waiuku progressing through with a bye to set up two good semifinals between Waiuku v Manurewa and Pukekohe v Hunua. A fresh Waiuku side playing some outstanding bowls was too strong for Manurewa winning 22-4 and in the other Semi Pukekohe led by skip Sharon Siegruhn defeated Hunua 19-9.

Round two Men’ssaw Homai beat Papakura , Papakura East End beat Pukekohe, Clarks Beach defeated Te Kauwhata and Manurewa beat Waiuku giving a semifinal of Homai and Pukekohe and Clarks Beach v Manurewa. Manurewa proved to strong for Clarks Beach winning 20-12 and Homai also to strong for Pukekohe winning 20-13.

On B green the Women’s final produced some fine bowls with Waiuku’s Marama Onehi (s), Andrea Williams, Bette Holmes and Pam Brighouse coming off a big win in the semi not able to recreate that semi form in the final, going down to a focused Pukekohe side of Sharon Siegruhn (s), Sheryl Nasey, Sheryl Brownlee and Kathy Steiner 16-7.

The men’s final in darkness and almost a need for torches, the experienced Manurewa team of Dave Clark (s), Shane Drabble, Paul Howe and Roger Andrew were to much for Vince Hape and has team of Tile Tuitama, Taraiva Teritaiti and Patrick Stanaway from Homai.

Congratulations to Manurewa men and Pukekohe women on winning the Bowls Counties Manukau Champ of Champ Fours
